Mayor Bloomberg: I Would Cut The Number Of Teachers In Half

Mayor Bloomberg was apparently full of interesting things to say while talking at MIT this week. Not only did he refer to the NYPD as “my own army but he also apparently expressed a very, shall we say, interesting view on how he would fix the city’s schools in a perfect world: “If I had the ability to just design the system and say ex cathedra this is what we’re going to do you would cut the number of teachers in half and weed out all the bad ones.

The man who once disastrously hired magazine executive Cathie Black to run the city’s schools and has failed in his attempts at merit-based layoffs then went on to explain that ”double the class size with a better teacher is a good deal for the students.

Full quote: “Education is very much, I’ve always thought, just like the real estate business. Real estate business, there are three things that matter: location, location, location is the old joke. Well in education, it is: quality of teacher, quality of teacher, quality of teacher. And I would—if I had the ability, which nobody does really, to just design a system and say, ‘ex cathedra, this is what we’re going to do,’ you would cut the number of teachers in half, but you would double the compensation of them, and you would weed out all the bad ones and just have good teachers. And double the class size with a better teacher is a good deal for the students.”

Yes, teacher quality is important. You know how you improve teacher quality? Reducing class sizes (even the best teacher can’t keep a room of 40 little kids under control), increasing salaries to attract the best and brightest, oh and giving them some vague semblance of JOB SECURITY so that the best teachers will actually want to teach.

Fuck you, Bloomberg.

This was originally posted here, but was taken down by the author due to too many readers contacting (harassing) the author’s former superintendent and school district. With respect, this story is too important to die. Please don’t abuse this by contacting the district. If you wish to respect…

This makes me sick to my stomach. I fear censorship so deeply— did no one read Fahrenheit 451?

You all need to take the time to read this.

wow…

Read this.

This is incredible. What a disservice to those students. This is why religion needs to stay out of schools.

As a future teacher (albeit, at a younger grade level) things like this almost make me want to reconsider my career path. To think that parents actively protest against the education of their own children is just disgusting and sickening, and the fact that this teacher was punished for encouraging her students to READ is just…there are no words for how angry this makes me.
